Suppress & Encourage

Timon Cline recently recently published an article at American Reformer about the historical Christian understanding as civil rulers as nursing fathers. In his article, he referenced an election sermon preached by Edward Dorr in 1765 to the General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut. The sermon, entitled “The duty of civil rulers, to be nursing fathers to the church of Christ,” helpfully explains the role and responsibility the civil magistrate has in a society “to provide for, and support the publick exercises of religion.” Cline, in his article, references a specific part of the sermon where Dorr is explaining “how, and in what ways civil rulers are to be nursing fathers to the church of Christ. The passage is long but is well worth our time and consideration.

There are 14 statewide initiatives on the ballot in Colorado this Fall. They cover a wide variety of issues related to abortion, school choice, and law enforcement. Back to Basics

In the classic children’s book, Madeline, the reader is told that the little girls attending the Parisian school were taught to “smile at the good and frown at the bad.” For those familiar with the Bible, such a description brings to mind Romans 12:9, “Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” This is a command given to all Christians and yet it is also the most basic role of the civil magistrate or government.

Just Say No

Last week, Republican House Representative Brandi Bradley of Littleton (HD-39) had a viral post on her X account about her son’s experience in his high school world history class. Apparently the teacher of the class, a longtime educator in the “Conservative” Douglas County School District, was teaching on gender fluidity in relation to artist, Leonardo da Vinci. After showing a video which suggested da Vinci was possibly an homosexual, the teacher floated the idea that da Vinci was also “gender fluid” and the Mona Lisa painting was perhaps a self-portrait of his feminine identity. The whole thing is of course ridiculous and Representative Bradley is absolutely in the right to bring it to public attention and fight back. However, with further information provided, Rep. Bradley’s situation sadly becomes a helpful case study on the ineffectiveness of the Right in politics and culture today.

Restoration of Dignity

Last Wednesday evening Colorado Governor, Jared Polis, had the chance to speak at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Polis was one of the Democrat governors who were given such an opportunity alongisde Kathy Hochul of New York, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and of course Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz of Minnesota. Polis has been the governor of the Centennial State since 2018 and most recently won his reelection bid in 2022 by an almost 20-point margin. Polis has helped drive Colorado in a progressive direction and while it was a Democrat specific event, Polis’ comments were broadcasted to a national audience. Polis used such an opportunity to say the following,

As a Redditor, gamer, entrepreneur and Swiftie from the free state of Colorado, I’m excited by Kamala Harris’ vision for protecting and expanding our personal freedom, Internet freedom and economic freedom. Democrats welcome weird but we’re not weirdos telling people who to marry, whether or not to have kids. These Project 2025 guys, like Trump and Vance, are not just weird, they’re dangerous.

Identity Politics

Last week, Democrat Vice Presidential candidate, Tim Walz, stopped in Denver for a one-night fundraiser and promptly returned to the midwest. This comes one week after former President Donald Trump passed through Aspen for a private fundraiser himself. The lack of time spent in Colorado by both tickets indicates that Colorado is not in play this Fall for the Republicans. Thoroughly blue for the last decade, Trump sent out a post referring to Colorado as a “political cesspool.” Trump has his reasons to use such strong language given the Democrats in Colorado attempted to keep him off the primary ballot entirely. Democrats in Colorado control the governor seat, the senate, the house of representatives and the mayors of both Denver and Colorado Springs. With critical elections upcoming this Fall, one would think the Colorado G.O.P. would be entirely focused in getting whatever candidates they can across the finish line, and yet the topic of debate at the moment is if the chairman of the party should step down or not. This is a sad example of an observation C.S. Lewis famously made, “The game is to have them all running around with fire extinguishers whenever there’s a flood; and all crowding to that side of the boat which is already nearly gone under.”
